Retreat Association has commissioned an icon as an enduring reminder of the value of Retreats and reflective prayer.
Iconographer John Coleman, also known as Ikonjohn, has produced icons in over 200 churches worldwide including York Minster, Exeter, Truro Cathedrals and Sherborne Abbey. John has also given icons to Rowan Williams, Justin Welby, the Pope, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and the Queen.
John has very generously offered to create an icon for the Retreat Association free of charge.
The word icon simply means ‘image’. Icons have been used for centuries to depict Bible stories and offer a way of entering into the story through prayer, stillness and contemplation . All these practices are associated with retreat and lend themselves uniquely to the heart of our work.
The theme of our icon will be The Woman at the Well (John 4:1–42). This has been chosen for its universal appeal and the many different themes associated with retreat and spiritual direction.
John will begin to sketch the outline of the icon during the summer and will attend the Retreat Association Conference in June 2018 where the icon will be hallowed in a special service.
Once the icon has been completed we hope there will be an opportunity for it to be used in retreat centres and as a resource to help people in their prayer and retreat life including outreach to those as yet unfamiliar with retreat.
Here’s your opportunity to be part of the project by sponsoring part of the icon.
We will have regular updates on the progress of the icon as it develops – keep watching this space!
