Trustee with law and governance expertise


The Charity has recently undergone some changes to its governance and constitution. As a result we are seeking to appoint a trustee with charity law and governance experience to join our board of trustees and help to provide leadership and guidance in these areas.


The main duties of the role would be: to advise the Retreat Association’s Executive Director and Trustees on governance and charity law; to be proactive in providing guidance to the Retreat Association’s Executive Director and Trustees on any governance issues that arise in the course of the Retreat Association’s business; to keep up to date with changes in governance and charity law requirements and to advise the Retreat Association’s Executive Director and Trustees of issues of relevance to the Retreat Association.


We are seeking someone with at least 3 years experience in governance and charity law, including previous experience as a charity trustee. They would also need to be a practising Christian who is sympathetic to the work of the RA and able to share the vision of offering support to those looking for stillness and silence in their lives. They would need to be able to work collaboratively with the Retreat Association’s Director and Trustees and be an effective communicator.


The trustees meet 4 times a year (daytime, usually in London) as well as one 2-day meeting at a central location every two years. This appointment would also involve membership of the operations sub-committee, which meets 4 times a year.

Retreat Association Trustees

We have two current vacancies for trustees with specific skills:

Trustee with fundraising and marketing or promotions expertise


We are seeking to appoint a trustee with fundraising, marketing and/or media experience to join our board of trustees and help to provide leadership and guidance in effective ways to raise funds and raise the profile of the charity.


The main duties of the role would be to advise the Retreat Association's Executive Director and Trustees on: effective ways to raise funds for the charity, including the development of supporters, the organisation of fundraising events and activities, applications for grants, corporate funding and major donors; ways to market the charity including an understanding of the charity’s key subscribers, creating a compelling message, identifying appropriate marketing channels and the most effective means of using them; how to increase the profile of the RA via local and national media channels; issues relating to the use of media both in proactive and reactive situations.


We are seeking someone with experience of working in a fundraising, marketing or media capacity in either a paid or voluntary role. Some previous experience of charity trusteeship is preferred. They would also need to be a practising Christian who is sympathetic to the work of the Retreat Association and able to share the vision of offering support to those looking for stillness and silence in their lives. A good communicator, able to work collaboratively with the Charity's Executive Director and Trustees.

Vacancy for:

Deputy Manager - residential

40 hours per week (to include some weekends a month)

Salary: £15,500

The Deputy Manager assists the Manager in the care of guests and supports the operation of Claridge House - a Quaker retreat centre near Lingfield in Surrey.

Employment benefits include one bedroomed accommodation for the duration of the employment on a service occupancy agreement, with full board including meals, fuel, water rates and council tax.

Applicants need to be energetic, confident, hardworking, able to multi-task, with strong communication, administrative and practical skills. Ideally with some experience of marketing and fundraising and in sympathy with Quaker values.
