Clergy Wellbeing
Recognising the central role that those in ordained ministry play in our churches and communities, we also understand the importance of enabling clergy (in service, training and retired) to find the support that they need in order to sustain their ministry.
On this page we gather together resources and events that have the specific focus of supporting clergy in their work.

Retreat Centres with a focus on supporting Clergy
St Antony's Priory

We are particularly keen to encourage members of the clergy and others in ministry to make use of the resources and support we can offer.
Retreats
Our retreat Cottage is tucked away behind the main Priory building, and has four self-catering units for clergy wishing to spend a few days on individual private retreat (we don’t run any organised or group retreats). The accommodation is offered on a donation basis, and each room (there are three doubles and one twin) has a sitting area, kitchen facilities and en-suite shower room.
Guests are invited to make the most of the opportunity for spiritual refreshment, by enjoying the peace and quiet of this place, and are very welcome to join the Priory community for timetabled services in the Chapel, as well as make use of the library and explore the gardens.
Quiet Days
St Antony’s is an ideal place for Quiet Days: it’s easy to get to, we have a range of meeting rooms, lovely surroundings and, of course, that magnificent view…
A Quiet Day is like a mini-retreat: some time out to reflect, be still and re-charge. You may wish simply to enjoy some peace and quiet alone, but you will also be very welcome to attend any services taking place in the Chapel.
Half days, either morning or afternoon, as well as full days can be booked. If coming for a full day, please bring a packed lunch. For further details, availability, bookings and costs, please contact the office.
Additional Information
There is a rhythm of daily prayer in the Chapel, including Morning Prayer, daily Mon-Fri, and a weekday Eucharist (usually Tuesdays and Thursdays) at 12noon.
Our Sunday service is at 10.30am, followed by coffee in the library. The Chapel is also available for private prayer and reflection at other times. See the Chapel page for more information.
We may also be able to offer additional support, for those who want it, including:
An opportunity for an informal chat with a trained and experienced spiritual director or a member of the clergy able to offer a listening ear. Any such listening would be strictly confidential, subject to issues of safeguarding.

At GoHealth we offer a range of online self-led courses that can be found here: https://gohealth.org.uk/training-and-courses/page/2/. Some of our courses that support clergy and their wellbeing are:
Burn Like Stars - Go on a journey today to explore how to live and work in healthy and holistic way, grounded in the wisdom of our Christian faith. We hope the course will provide challenge and inspiration to help you flourish, particularly in relation to your work.
Being Trauma Informed - Being trauma informed is a compassionate and essential skill for a Gospel centred ministry. In this course we draw on neuro-science to learn wise and compassionate ways to respond to anyone who has been affected by trauma so that we can build communities that are safe for all.
LiFT – Life in Fullness, Together - LiFT offers a refreshing approach to wellbeing and wisdom – empowering each of us to nurture our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. Rooted in biblical teaching and scientific research, LiFT provides practical guidance and Christian reflection on coping well with stress, sleep, nutrition, movement, spiritual and mental health, and our relationships.
Sheldon Retreat

Sheldon's USP is its "No Clergy Shop Talk" house rule. Time totally focused on you and your needs not getting drawn in to listening to other people's needs. We are specifically here for supporting people in ministry and/or their spouses at times of stress, crisis, burnout or breakdown. Many of our resources are open to everyone, but people in ministry are always at the heart of what we're here for. You can come for core maintenance (no needs too trivial) or come in a crisis - we're used to holding the edges too and will hold whatever you bring in strict confidence. If you don't know what to ask for just pick up the phone and say "I'm in a bad way" and we'll talk through what might be available for you here. The Sheldon Community has built a unique body of experience and expertise in this field over many years. We get both the fulfilment and the risks/dangers of ministry. 1:1 support sessions are currently available primarily on private retreats and R5 (read, rest, retreat, relax, recuperate) weeks. We also have a free and confidential online mutual support resource for people in ministry - the Sheldon Hub www.sheldonhub.org.

Shallowford House

Shallowford House has a growing heart for clergy wellbeing and is currently developing this area of ministry alongside the Diocese of Lichfield.
In 2026, Shallowford hosted a Clergy Wellbeing Retreat Day, which reached capacity within 24 hours and demonstrated a clear need for spaces of rest, reflection and renewal for those in ministry. The day offered an opportunity to step back from the pressures of parish life, spend time in prayer and quiet reflection, and experience the peaceful setting of Shallowford House and the surrounding countryside.
We are actively exploring how Shallowford can serve clergy and church leaders more intentionally in the months and years ahead. Our aspiration is for Shallowford to become a trusted place of retreat and restoration for clergy: somewhere to rest, pray, reflect, seek renewal, and reconnect with God in a supportive and hospitable environment.
Clergy and church leaders are warmly welcome to contact us to discuss individual retreat stays, quiet days, residential visits, or future clergy wellbeing opportunities.

Whilst there you will have opportunity to either just have space, or have someone to talk with, and be led in guided meditation and breathwork. You can be given mindfulness awareness practices to take away with you to help continued relief of stress when back in your home situation.
Same Roots Collective also has an inhouse Yoga practitioner, and there is also a private indoor heated pool onsite which you can hire for the 50% reduced 'sabbatical/personal retreat' price of £5 for an hour.

St Beuno's Jesuit Spirituality Centre

We offer Individually Guided Retreats of between 2 and 8 days throughout the year as well as the Full Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius as a 30 day retreat or in Stages of 10 or 15 day. All these retreats offer one to one spiritual direction each day, taking the retreatant where they are and listening for the ways in which God is drawing the person. Many clergy find individually guided retreats highly beneficial for their relationship with God, their ministry and their lives. About 450 ordained people attend these retreats each year - some come to reconnect with God in a deeper way, others to specifically discern a way ahead in ministry, and others simply to rest and recuperate with God.
We also offer training in Spiritual Conversation and Spiritual Direction - offering those in ministry an approach to accompanying others in their spiritual lives or simply to be able to offer a discerning, listening ear in a pastoral context.

Stanton House Christian Retreat

So many people in ministry spend their lives caring for others. Holding things together. Showing up. Giving out. But eventually, even faithful people become tired. Ministers shouldn't have to earn rest, they're allowed to receive it too.
Stanton House is a place created for rest, quiet, prayer, reflection and space to breathe. We offer individual retreats, guided retreats for those who want a bit more input, and spiritual direction for those who need a confidential space to process. Spiritual direction is with our house warden/chaplain and you can book in for this when booking for an individual retreat.
We would love to welcome you and give you a space to come away and rest a while.
Please visit our website for more information and to book https://www.stantonhouse.org.uk/. If you have any queries please contact the office at office@stantonhouse.org.uk and we'll be happy to help.
