Warden / House for Duty

The Well, Centre for Spirituality

Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol

A New Warden is sought for The Well, Centre for Spirituality, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol.

This small 15th century house has been a place for ecumenical contemplative prayer since 1991. It is much used by groups and individuals for times of quiet. In addition to rooms for quiet, there are two bedrooms (a simple breakfast is provided), and a Quiet Garden.

We are seeking someone who can develop the work of the house even further.

  • The ‘prayer feel’ of the House is of prime importance, and we are looking for a person with personal spiritual depth and broad experience in prayer. The Warden helps to sustain the ethos of Christ-centred prayer, creating a space where people of any denomination or none can respond to the holy and to the gift of silence.

  • The Warden needs to be a hospitable and compassionate presence, with a relaxed openness and genuine interest in people, coupled with flexibility and a sense of humour.

  • The post requires initiative and common sense. The warden will be supported by the Management Committee, the Friends of Elsie Briggs House, and associated volunteers and supporters.

Accommodation for the Warden is in the adjoining cottage, which is owned by the Friends of Elsie Briggs House. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, one of them small; downstairs a kitchen-diner, living room, and toilet / shower room. The cottage shares the beautiful Quiet Garden of the main House.

The Friends will pay the basic outgoings (water rates, gas, electricity, council tax, and insurance for the building) and will keep the warden’s cottage in good repair.

Honorarium. There is a contribution towards living expenses, currently £170 per calendar month, and out of pocket expenses are refunded. The appointment would suit someone with some additional source of income, possibly with a pension, and is open to clergy or laity or religious.
